How to Set and Achieve Your Goals

Have you thought about where you want to be at the end of the year? This thought may have popped into your head when you were celebrating the New Year. Fueled by champagne, you may have spoken about taking on a new role, starting a new business or just making big changes. You were excited, looking ahead with hope, but now that we are into the third week of 2017, it is time to take a serious look at how to set and achieve your goals.

Goal setting should start with careful consideration of what you want to achieve. Your goals should motivate you and inspire you to put in the effort to make them happen. When thinking about your goals, a good tip is to apply the SMART goals rule. There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the essence is this – goals should be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time Bound

Sticking to this rule will help you determine clear goals that have a specific purpose or value, measure your success, identify if it is possible to achieve the goals (try, however, to resist the urge of setting goals that are too easy), ensure the goals are in line with the direction you want to take and generate a sense of urgency to bring on achievement.

If your goals tick all of the above, we can now look at what you need to achieve them. Most goals are about taking big (or small) steps forward. You might want to boost your career by moving into a management role, or you may be you are looking to start your own business and become your own boss. These steps require new skills and without these skills, your goals may not be achievable.

So how can you obtain these skills and start kicking goals?  This is the perfect time of year to leap into learning with the Business Growth Centre. We currently have three accredited courses on offer that can provide you with the skills required to achieve your goals. And thanks to Smart & Skilled fee subsidies*, you could start learning for less.

If a full qualification isn’t something you can commit to right now, you could consider a Short Course to brush up on your skills and test the waters for future study.
